Rebecca McLean, Executive Director
Hello.  I am Rebecca McLean. I have been the Director of Coats Senior Center, Inc. since February 2007.  I live in Erwin with my husband, David, and our son, Colton.
Upon graduation from Campbell University in 1989 with a B.S. degree in Middle Grades Education, I taught NC history, language arts, and drama for eight years.    I later pursued a master's degree in library science in 1997 at North Carolina Central University.  After some difficult course work, I graduated summa cum laude in 2000 with a Master's degree in Library and Information Science.
Before graduation from NCCU, I started working as school library media coordinator and worked in that career for nearly eight years.  I then stayed at home just before and after the birth of my son in 2005. After a year and a half at home as a new mother, I was ready to work again and try something new.  I was hired by the Coats Senior Center Corporation and began a  career totally out of my field of expertise.  Now I am currently working on senior center director's certification and will spearhead an effort to make the  center become a senior center of distinction.  This will entail a lot of hard work and stepping out of comfort zones, but I am up for the challenge.
I must say this is a very rewarding and exciting job.  The seniors are so wise and have so much good advice.  They are also a lot of fun.  I learn so much from them and have seen many things in a different light since taking this job over four years ago.  I have learned to quilt and sew.  Although not an expert, I have the best teachers here and am learning tricks and tips from these talented men and women.  I have learned not to take for granted that many of these people have faced tougher times than many us may ever know; these fine folks perservered and got through the tough times.  These inspiring stories remind me that each and every day is worth the challenge to meet their needs, while reaching out to others to provide the services they need in order that they may live the rest of their lives fulfilled and healthy.
Knowing me, I just might try another career before I die, but right now, this is what I am enjoying.  If you know someone who is over 55, bored and lonely, send them our way.  We will do our best to make them happy and see to it that they are enriched mentally, emotionally, physically, and socially.  Take care and visit us.
